Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Can I Expect During a Chemical Peel?

Prior to your appointment, your aesthetician will help determine which type of chemical peel is best for you. A chemical peel is a rather quick treatment, taking about 30 minutes. First, your skin will be cleansed and prepped to remove all surface oils. Then, the chemical solution is applied to your skin. During this time, you may feel some discomfort- a slight burning or tingling sensation. This is the acids penetrating into your skin and working at the cellular level. Your aesthetician may give you a cooling fan to keep you comfortable and then a neutralizing toner will be applied, which should stop the stinging, followed by soothing balm and broad spectrum sunscreen.

  • What Happens When I Go Home?

You may experience some slight redness immediately after your treatment but this should dissipate after a few hours. With very superficial chemical peels such as glycolic and mandelic, some light flaking is common a few days after your treatment whereas with the deeper superficial peels such as a Jessner’s or TCA, it is common to experience some moderate peeling as you shed the dead outer layer of your skin. The most peeling usually occurs from days 2 to 5 but you should plan on peeling for about 7-10 days depending on the depth of your peel. Your esthetician will give you detailed post-care instructions to guide you through your post-care journey. Following your treatment, it is important to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen daily, as your skin is very susceptible to injury. You may wear makeup but some patients find that it enhances the appearance of peeling skin and prefer to go without it. A post-peel regimen will be prescribed to ensure proper healing.

  • Are Chemical Peels Right for Me?

Chemical peels are minimally invasive procedures, making many patients seeking skin rejuvenation good candidates. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing. Patients should be in overall good health, free from any conditions that could delay the healing process. At North Shore Aesthetics, we can cater our chemical peels to your skin type and lifestyle, making it the appropriate treatment for just about anyone!
