As we age we lose volume in our face. This creates droopiness, wrinkles, and excess skin. Great results are achieved with laser skin rejuvenation. On the same token most of the skin rejuvenation lasers offer skin tightening. With laser skin tightening you are able to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face, neck, and body. This provides nonsurgical alternatives to a more invasive procedure.
An ideal candidate for laser skin tightening is someone with mild to moderate laxity of the skin of the face, neck, and body. The most popular forms of skin tightening are radiofrequency devices such as TruSculpt, Intense Pulsed Light treatments or our Fractional 1540 that treat a wide array of skin concerns but does offer mild skin tightening. During these treatments you will feel heat and that heat is what stimulates the collagen deeper underneath the skin to create the tightening effect of the skin. Results can start to be seen upwards of 6 to 8 weeks post treatment.
A number of factors can lead to unevenness in the tone and texture of the skin. Common complaints include freckles, age spots, acne scars and visible blood vessels and vascular lesions. Loss of skin tone often occurs as the result of aging, sun damage and smoking and causes the skin to sag. When it comes to treating these problems and signs of aging, you have a number of choices. For many patients, laser skin rejuvenation is the choice that provides the greatest results with the lowest risk of complications.
Laser Skin Rejuvenation, Also Known as Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin rejuvenation or resurfacing is a procedure that is intended to improve the tone and texture of the skin. The procedure works by using targeted laser energy to remove the outer layer of the skin known as the epidermis while simultaneously heating and shrinking the dermis, causing collagen production and a tightening effect. As the area heals, new skin forms on the surface that is smoother, firmer and has fewer imperfections.
How is Laser Skin Rejuvenation Performed?
Laser skin rejuvenation treatments are performed in your doctor’s office on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia is usually used to numb small areas. If your entire face is being treated, your doctor may recommend IV sedation. Small areas can take as little as a half hour to treat while full-face treatments last up to 1 1/2 hours. Your doctor will use a small hand held device to deliver laser energy to precisely targeted areas of your skin.
Am I a Candidate for Laser Skin Rejuvenation?
Laser skin rejuvenation is well received by many patients. If you are in overall good health and free from diseases or disorders that could cause excess bleeding or delayed healing, you are likely to be a good candidate for laser skin rejuvenation. Let your doctor know about any medications you are taking and if you suffer from cold sores as laser treatments could cause breakouts. The procedure is dependent on the patient’s skin and pigmentation and the doctor will discuss with you if you are a good candidate.
Recovery from Laser Skin Rejuvenation
Immediately following your treatment, you skin will be bandaged covered with antibiotic ointment. You will be given detailed instructions on how to clean the area to apply ointment to prevent scabbing. You are likely to experience some swelling and stinging the first night after the procedure and itching as healing takes place in the days following your treatment. Within about a week to ten days, the skin will be healed, but have a pinkish to reddish hue. Make-up may be worn at this time. The entire healing process usually takes two to three weeks. The redness is common and may last up to several months.
