So you have made the decision to have plastic surgery. You may be a bit nervous, excited, and overwhelmed all at the same time. It is normal to feel anxious before a procedure. The way to quell any fears is to be well informed about the process from start to finish. Here are a few things you need to keep in mind before you have plastic surgery.
Choose the Right Plastic Surgeon
Of course choosing the right surgeon for your procedure is high on the list of things to consider. One of the key things to look for is whether a physician is a true board-certified plastic surgeon. There are some surgeons that will claim that they are cosmetic surgery board-certified, which is not recognized by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The only way to ensure your physician has the training, skill, and high standards are to check his or her certification. Schedule a consultation in which you can tour the office, talk to the physician and ask any questions you may have about the procedure you are considering.
Preparing Yourself Before Surgery
It is important that you take care of yourself before surgery to minimize the risk of complications. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Make a list of all current medications you are on and any medical problems you have. Notify your plastic surgeon of any changes to your health before your procedure.
Arranging Post-Operative Help
Depending on the procedure, you may need some help afterward. It may be limited to transportation from the surgery center, or you may need some help for a few days after your surgery. For each individual patient, each doctor may have a different recovery time in mind. For example, many of our patients who have undergone breast augmentation are able to return to work after four days, as long as they are not lifting or bending. Other surgeons advise waiting ten days before returning to work.
