Breast asymmetry is far more common than most people realize. In fact, it is believed that virtually all women have some degree of breast asymmetry. For many women, this asymmetry is so slight that it is barely noticeable, or it may not be noticeable at all. Others are not so fortunate, and their pronounced breast asymmetry affects them physically and/or emotionally. If your breast asymmetry bothers you, breast surgery can help you achieve a more balanced and natural-looking bust line.
When to Consider Surgery
Breast asymmetry is usually a difference in size or volume. If there is only a slight difference, this may be unnoticeable most or all of the time. However, some women’s breasts can differ in size by more than a cup and may be noticeable even to strangers. Additionally, some women’s breasts may differ in shape or may go through changes during pregnancy, nursing, and aging that lead to asymmetry. For example, aging breasts may sag at different rates, leading to one sagging noticeably lower than the other. In some cases, asymmetry can be attributed to breast augmentation. If a plastic surgeon does not account for natural asymmetry, it can become more pronounced after inserting breast implants. Surgical complications that may arise after breast augmentation can cause noticeable aesthetic changes to one breast only. No matter the cause, if the differences between your breasts are distressing to you, consider scheduling a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your options for achieving a more even breast appearance.
Your Surgical Options
Breast asymmetry can be corrected through breast surgery. There are several surgical approaches that can help you achieve breast symmetry:
- Breast Augmentation: Dr. Schlechter can insert an implant into the smaller breast or differently sized implants into both breasts to balance them out. This approach will increase the size of the breasts and can also improve their shape.
- Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer: Dr. Schlechter can extract excess fat from an area of the body and inject it into the smaller breast to boost its size. This approach can be successful for those with minor asymmetry (i.e., less than one cup size difference), but it is more difficult to rely on as a correction for breast asymmetry because the amount of fat that will successfully graft into the breast tissue is variable.
- Breast Lift: Dr. Schlechter can perform a breast lift to reshape and reposition the breasts so that they appear youthful and balanced. This approach is best for women whose breasts are sagging, especially if their sagging is uneven.
- Breast Reduction: Dr. Schlechter can surgically remove excess breast tissue to reduce the size of just the larger breast or both breasts. This approach is best for women whose overly large breasts cause them emotional or physical discomfort.
- Breast Revision: Dr. Schlechter can perform breast revision to correct asymmetry caused by surgical complications from breast augmentation, such as implant deflation or capsular contracture. This approach improves the condition of the breasts and balances out their appearance.
Breast surgery can correct breast asymmetry and help women achieve a more natural, even, and aesthetically pleasing breast appearance. Allergan has recently released one of the best breast implants available today. These implants are called Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants and were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just last fall. The INSPIRA® Implants give women the chance to choose high-quality implants that produce the fullest roundness for the greatest results.
What You Need to Know
These new implants accompany an already well-stocked line of implants by Natrelle from Allergan, which is a multi-national pharmaceutical company and one of the leading providers of breast implants. What sets the new implants apart from the rest? Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants are made of a highly cohesive silicone gel with a high gel-fill ratio. Sometimes called “gummy bear implants” because they hold their shape even when cut, these implants are particularly resistant to tissue compression or distortion and can maintain their shape for many years without rupturing. The Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants are made with the fullest roundness of any implants yet, and they also have a reduced risk of implant irregularities, rippling, and rupturing. As a measure of assurance to those concerned about safety, the new Natrelle INSPIRA® implants have been approved by the FDA, which means they have been through extensive evaluations to determine their safety for use. Lastly, the Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants are made with a soft feel and are available in multiple sizes, profiles (projections), and textures.
How These New Implants Could Benefit You
If you have yet to undergo breast augmentation because you haven’t yet found the right “fit,” now may be the perfect time to do so. The Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants are made to help women with a variety of body shapes and have achieved great popularity already among women across the country. These implants are especially beneficial for women who identify with the following criteria:
- Need shape correction
- Have thin breast tissue
- Have limited lower breast pole fullness
- Are undergoing breast reconstruction
The Natrelle INSPIRA® Round Gel Breast Implants offer supreme shape correction with a limited chance of rippling and long-lasting results. Their beautifully full and round results do not compromise the feel and can give women improved breast fullness with a natural appearance and feel.

The IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implant is a new advancement in saline implant technology. It offers an innovative, new option for patients desiring saline implants rather than silicone gel implants. Many patients still have concerns regarding silicone gel implants even though prospective and retrospective studies show them to be safe. The IDEAL IMPLANT® is an alternative saline implant that is filled with saltwater but has the feel of a silicone gel implant. This implant is very different from the traditional saline implant.
The IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implant has a more natural feel due to the internal structure of the implant rather than from what it is filled with. This implant has a natural look and feel despite being filled with saline. The internal structure controls the movement of saline to eliminate the fluid wave effect or water-hammer effect which can be noticeable with traditional saline implants. There is no sloshing. Traditional saline implants tend to have an increased incidence of wrinkling and rippling. Due to the structure of the IDEAL IMPLANT®, the risk of wrinkling and rippling is significantly reduced. Traditional saline implants tend to collapse at the upper pole due to the gravitational movement of saline to the lower aspect of the implant. Due to its internal structure, the IDEAL IMPLANT® does not collapse when the implant is upright.
As with traditional saline implants, the IDEAL IMPLANT® is placed through a smaller incision than silicone gel breast implants, which results in a smaller potential scar. Also, due to the saline, the volume of the implant is adjustable within a certain amount to help correct mildly asymmetric breasts. The edge of the implant conforms to the contour of the woman’s chest.
One of the concerns with silicone gel implants is the risk of silent rupture. The advantage of the IDEAL IMPLANT® is that women will know the implant is intact simply by looking in the mirror. In the event of a rupture or leak, an MRI is not necessary.
The IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implant is a nice alternative for women seeking breast augmentation surgery who desire the feel of a silicone gel implant but do not want silicone gel implants and do not want the less natural feel of a traditional saline implant.
